Quantitative Methods I: Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods

Course Objectives

  • Build a foundation of the core concepts used in descriptive and inferential statistics while enhancing skills in statistical reasoning.
  • Learn a variety of statistical tools to summarize and analyze quantitative classroom data.
  • Develop an understanding of the critical steps involved in quantitative research.
  • Gain knowledge and skills necessary to independently conduct a quantitative study based on one simple but versatile research design.
  • Increase ability to understand and critique presentations and publications on quantitative research studies.

Course Description

The Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods course is designed specifically for the unique needs of EFL instructors who have a desire to learn more about quantitative research methods and statistics but have minimal background or training. Course instruction covers two major areas, descriptive statistics with classroom applications and quantitative research methods based on inferential statistics. Emphasis is placed on understanding fundamental concepts underlying statistics and research methods that can serve as foundation for exploring advanced topics. Several sessions of the course are devoted to leading participants through all stages of individualized research projects based in participants’ own classrooms. The course instructor has extensive training in quantitative methods and experience teaching statistics at the university level. He takes great care to deliver abstract material with close attention to student comprehension while maintaining a friendly, supportive, and enjoyable learning environment.

Instructional Methods

  • Ten weekly one-hour live online sessions with two-way audio and video
  • Carefully paced lecutures with ample opportunity for questions and discussion
  • Discussion boards for out-of-class interaction
  • Reading assignments that supplement instruction and prepare participants for lecture content
  • Short homework assignments including light calculation and writing acitivities
  • Individualized research project based on the t test for independent groups

Course Requirements

  • Computer with high-speed internet access and video and audio streaming
  • Time to commit to sessions, assignments, and discussion boards
  • Background in research methods and statistics not required

 The Instructor

Gregory Sholdt teaches English and Intercultural Studies at Kobe University in Japan. He has had extensive graduate-level training in statistics and quantitative research methods and experience teaching introductory statistics courses to graduate students in education, social work, and nursing at the University of Hawaii. He has been sharing his passion for the quantitative arts through workshops and presentations at international conferences and local JALT chapters throughout Japan. He was a winner of the Best of JALT award in 2006 for his workshop, “Zen and the Art of Statistics.” He currently serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for the JALT Journal.
